Project FAQ
READ THIS ENTRY BEFORE SENDING PMS, please. The bullet points below answer what communities are part of AP (basically whose files are we reuploading) and HOW TO JOIN AP.

  • Most of the older subbed videos are gone. There are a lot of fans out there who would be willing to help out, but all of us would like to ask for the fansubbers' approval if we can reupload their files.

  • This community will contain all of [livejournal.com profile] taijiprojectsub's (Becky) subbed files. Per Becky's request, posts containing her files are locked to members only. Please join [livejournal.com profile] arashiproject to access these files. Please remember not to share Becky's files outside the community, but please feel free to direct everyone who wants to download the files to this community. Everyone's welcome!

  • This community will contain [livejournal.com profile] ao_no_michi's subbed files. All files will be on locked posts that only members have access to. Again, please remember not to share these files outside this community, but please feel free to redirect everyone who wants to download them here.

  • This community will contain all subbed files that [livejournal.com profile] techni_teddy and [livejournal.com profile] nyanchan have collaborated on. Again, please remember not to share these files outside this community, but please feel free to redirect everyone who wants to download them here.

  • Just click on JOIN, and wait to be accepted in the community!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE:

  • [Lyra/hanazawahyuuga here] As of 10.22.2016, AP is OPEN to trying to contact any other inactive subbing communities. If there are other comms that you wish to be contacted, please send me the email address and the LJ user of the owner/maintainer of that community. Email me at lyra.gill@gmail.com.

To the fansubbers:

  • We understand if you don't want your links posted outside your community. What we can suggest is that we can help you reupload the files, and you can be the one to edit the original journal entry of the subbed file. However, if you don't have time to maintain/update your community, I am more than willing to help you maintain the community (in accepting new members and updating old posts with new links). This way, your links will still remain inside your community.

MASTERPOSTS:

Why posting links in comments is not as feasible as you might think
1) I speak from personal experience and observation. many people go to a subbed video post, they see the link is dead. But they DO NOT search the comments for anyone who provided mirror links. i personally do that and when I recommend people do the same, they go, "are you crazy to go through 687978797 comments? why should i do the same?"
- What's more, most people will just hit reply and say, "Hey there, Subber, thanks for subbing. But the link is dead. Please upload soon."
- When the subber doesn't respond, they don't even check how long the subber has been off line, no longer on lj etc, they keep writing and asking for re-ups.
- therefore, even if you use this solution of sticking up re-up links in the comments of the post itself, 99/100 people will NOT check the comments to see if anyone has done so.

2) moreover, some comms have rules about no re-up of links fullstop, and this includes no re-uping of links in the comments of the post itself.
- in this scenario, your proposed idea wouldn't work either.

3) in some LJ communities/journals, both dead and alive, any reply with a link gets marked as spam and will not appear. this could be the subber's own setting and seems to be LJ's default setting. one example is Hanaraechan's comm.
- in this scenario, your proposed idea won't work because no one will see the re-upped link as it is marked and spam and will be deleted by the LJ powers that be.

4) there are some cases (in other non-arashi comms) where the comm is long dead and the mods have all abandoned ship. in those cases, lj steps in and makes that dead comm an archive. that means, it becomes a comm where no new entries can be posted by anyone to that comm, and no one can make any comments in any of the existing entries in said comm.
- again, your proposed scenario won't work here.

5) what happens if a new fan wants a file from a comm that is now dead and dead since 2009. they cannot join that comm because the mods are no longer around on LJ to allow them into the comm.
- even if you are a member of that dead comm and you put a re-uploaded link in the comments, how will these new fans gain access to that post in the first post?
- even if this dead comm has open membership, what makes you think the new fan will be the 1/100 who will look through all the comments to see if any kind person has put up a re-uped link?
- there's a 99.999 percent chance that even in a dead comm that is still open to anyone as long as they click join, your re-up will be marked and spam and deleted by LJ. even if that doesn't happen, 99 out of 100 people won't go looking at all the comments just to see if anyone has re-upped the file.
- as evidence, i cite you the example of the subbing group T101. That group removed all its download links to its older files in all its comm's entries. what did 99/100 of the users wanting the files now that the links have been removed do? they do not search the t101 comm for the modpost explaining why the T101 team did this. instead, the 99/100 of new users wanting the file, keep writing in the comments, "you claim you subbed this, but there are no download links. why?"
- again, your theory won't work here because that's the way folks are. They are lazy and won't read everything to find out why something is the way it is. they want to be spoon fed.

Another example, the mod account of the Kakenukero subbed archive list is for easy navigation of the archive, but people don't read her FAQ and still complain why her list is on etrangestorm and not in the Kakenukero subbed archive list. they also complain why it's so difficult to find the files they want without a "contents page". If they had only looked at the mod account for Kakenukero subbed archive list on etrangestorm, they will find it. But they do not do that. They also keep complaining that she leaves links to dead comms, deleted comms up even though she has stated on her main page why she doesn't do it.

People just don't READ. there's a 99% chance people WILL NOT want to go through all the pages of a post to look for re-ups.

Re: Why posting links in comments is not as feasible as you might think
I know what you mean. I currently maintain one community with my other friends. It's new and not much people know about that community because mostly subbed videos there comes from another fandom. I am the one who write the "rules" and "how to join" post. Almost everyday a few people who don't read it just click join. I reject them and said what should they do but they got it wrong, I attach a few pictures as example and they still got it wrong.

I want all people who come there enjoyed the videos but because of their own mistake and their own ignorance they can't join the community.

Arashi's communities are strict, I know that from my experience in other fandom. Fortunately, I join Arashi community first so I know how to behave in other fandom.

Re: Why posting links in comments is not as feasible as you might think
Precisely. Once, on the maintainer of kazunari (on her lj site jiyeop), I put up a list of latest subbed videos for her to add to the list. Someone replied to me and said that they cannot go to that page and kept getting the "access denied" message. I told them to go the subbing comm's main page to read the instructions etc, but you know the answer I got? "I keep getting access denied. I cannot go to the subbing group's page." How hard is it for them to delete all the numbers and get to the ".com" part and press enter?

This is why I keep saying that ALTHOUGH it is a good idea to put up new links in the original posts, 99 out of 100 people will not search the comments to do anything. They will hit enter and just write, "the link is dead, upload please". They will not check the comments. When anyone tells them to do that, they will tell you are crazy to suggest they waste time to go through ALL the pages of comments to find one link.

What's worse, they have to be told simple things like "check file size" because when they cannot unzip a file from a rar, they hit reply and say, "I get crc error, my computer says the file is corrupt. please re-up another file that is nor corrupt and won't give me error." They don't even realise that 99% of the time, the error happens because the file size is incomplete. They don't realise that they have to check file size after downloading just in case their internet connection fizzled out or something. And when I tell them to do that, they say, "But my computer says the file is complete. it downloaded OK. why should i do that?"

I once told someone that the latest winrar version lets them see password, but they say they cannot see the option even though I tell them to read everything carefully and even point them to the etrangestorm FAQ to help, but they still say, "I can't see it."

When most people are like, this plan to put new links in comment won't work. They just simply WILL NOT check the comments to see if anyone has put up new links. They will just type a new comment asking for the links to be replaced by the subber in the main post repeatedly.

And that's assuming links can be posted in the comments and not be marked as spam and deleted by the LJ settings. That's just 1 issue. There are so many more as I wrote in my original comment above.

Re: Why posting links in comments is not as feasible as you might think
Hello,

It seems like you've posted this exact same comment in both posts twice. Apologies but I'll have to delete the other one.

Also, I understand what you're saying. As I have told you in our previous conversation, I am approaching this project with a realistic mindset. I don't expect that all videos will get reuploaded - heck I don't even expect that I will get a reply from all fansubbers. I am just throwing around some IDEAS, after all.

In relation with each of your points...

1) You may say that an overwhelming majority don't check the comments, but there are still who do. If I can help other fans (whether they be 5 instead of 5000), I'll consider this project a success. Also, let's assume that a fansubber allows uploading of mirror links in the comments, then we can create a masterpost of links that direct people to the comments directly.

2) Then so be it. I'll ask permission from a fansubber, and he/she can either say yes or no. I'll respect his/her wishes. If he/she doesn't reply, I won't take action either.

3) Again, then so be it. (Same answer to point 2). Obviously I also won't reupload links that can't be seen anyway.

4) and 5) Let me copy from the above post: "We understand if you don't want your links posted outside your community. What we can suggest is that we can help you reupload the files, and you can be the one to edit the original journal entry of the subbed file. However, if you don't have time to maintain/update your community, I am more than willing to help you maintain the community (in accepting new members and updating old posts with new links). This way, your links will still remain inside your community."

Let's say that the community is long dead and the fansubbers cannot be contacted, then so be it. There's nothing else we can do about that. Let's say LJ stepped in and made the community an archive, so be it.

I'm getting the impression that you somehow think that I'm aiming to recover ALL files. That is NOT my intention. I am aiming to recover and reupload the files that can be recovered, and as I have previously mentioned, everything from this point will depend on the fansubbers' replies. If we get replies, we can go forward. If we don't, we obviously can't.

You say that "People just don't READ. there's a 99% chance people WILL NOT want to go through all the pages of a post to look for re-ups."

My answer? Helping that 1% who DO READ will make this project a success.

Again, and I really cannot reiterate this enough - actions from this point forward will depend on whether or not we can contact fansubbers.

Re: Why posting links in comments is not as feasible as you might think
As for 3, it might work to post the links without the http and www part, or something along the lines of:
